Loons Cottage is situated in the west mainland of Orkney on the edge of The RSPB Reserve "The Loons" in the parish of Birsay. As the cottage is situated on the edge of The Loons Bird Reserve you can see and hear a great variety of birds from your doorstep. Just a short drive/walk away there is the sea cliffs of Marwick Head, Kitchener's Memorial and the Brough of Birsay, which are good breeding grounds for sea birds, including puffins.
From this ideal location you can access many tourist attractions, Skara Brae, Skaill House and Bay of Skaill, Maeshowe, Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness, Earl's Palace just to name a few. It is a great base for fishing, bird watching, sight seeing, touring, walking, cycling or just relaxing.
Close by is Isbister Loch, Boardhouse Loch, Swannay Loch and Hundland Loch which are ideal for trout fishing. In Orkney Please note that trout fishing is seasonal running from March through to September. All fishing is free. The village of Dounby is just 4.5 miles away with the main town of Kirkwall 18miles away and only 10 miles from Stromness.
